Born in Yushima, Tokyo, in 1941, Kazuo Kobayashi is Director of Origami Kaikan in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, and the fourth president of renowned washi store Yushima no Kobayashi (est. 1858). Kobayashi also works to popularize and pass on washi culture and traditions by holding exhibitions, seminars and lectures in his role as Director of the International Origami Society, an NPO corporation recognized by the Japanese Cabinet Office. He began creating his own origami works in earnest while in his thirties. Kobayashi's deepest passion is passing on origami traditions that feature the wisdom and unique skill of the ancients, and propagate the role of origami in everyday life rooted in the hearts and minds of the Japanese people for centuries. Active not only in Japan, Kobayashi travels worldwide to showcase Japanese culture and promote international exchange. Recent works include Origami wa Naiteiru (Origami is Crying), (published by Aiikusya (available in Japanese only)), and CHIYOGAMI (published by Kadogawa Corporation (available in Japanese only)).
