What is oil paint?
Oil paint is a paint made by mixing pigments with vegetable oils such as poppy oil or linseed oil. The paint hardens when the oil comes into contact with air and oxidizes. The reason why oil paintings do not dry immediately after painting is because this chemical change progresses slowly. Unlike water-based paints, where the water evaporates, oil paints solidify as they are, so they remain thick even after drying.
