In the West, there are quite a few books that explain tailoring and bespoke techniques, but of course the text is entirely in English or French, so you have to get a rough grasp of the illustrations while frantically translating fragments of text... and it takes a lot of effort to learn. Even the explanations in Japanese are a bit difficult to understand. There are some books that explain techniques in Japan, but there are very few that explain in detail from basic drawing to finishing, like this book. Even if there are some, there are too few examples of application, and many of them are limited in content. I think tailoring techniques are originally passed down and improved over the years, from master to apprentice, from teacher to student, by actually showing the work and learning by watching and using your hands. So it goes without saying that the best way to learn is to become an apprentice to a craftsman and be taught directly by him. However, if you try to supplement that with a book, I think it would be quite difficult to explain it in a way that is easier to understand than this book. It provides detailed and helpful illustrations to explain the process.

(In fact, without these illustrations, many tasks are difficult to understand from text alone)

For example, there are no explanations or illustrations for how to sew with a hem stitch,
so even if a complete beginner reads it, they will probably be confused.

I think this is a textbook that should be approached after going through the stages of shirts and pants.

I think it's pretty much the same at both fashion schools, but
it's a tailored jacket for women that uses fusible interlining, and is taught as the finishing touch in the first year (or graduation project).
Men's jackets, which have wool interlinings fastened with a hem stitch, are often not included in the curriculum even at vocational schools.
At Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, where this book is used as a textbook in actual classes,
men's wear is a field that cannot be learned by just learning at the drop of a hat, so much so that there is a course dedicated to it.

That said, anyone should be able to use this book to learn the basic work flow of tailoring.

The analogy of a swan swimming in a lake has been famous since ancient times,
and this book gave me the impression that tailoring is exactly the same as that analogy.

Since there is no support from a teacher,
it is probably an extremely difficult task to make something from scratch by yourself,
but for those who want to try making something, why not try making it carefully,
using this book as a reference and assuming that you will fail first?

As this is a book with a strong professional character,
it is not priced like a magazine,
but I think it is the most useful tailoring guide available in Japan.
